Sky Betting and Gaming tech team helps kick start employment in Leeds
A team of tech graduates from Sky Betting & Gaming’s Software Academy put their volunteering hours to good use this week as they got involved in employability skills and football drills with the UK’s leading sport for employment charity, Street League.
The charity - which uses the power of sport to enable people to achieve their full potential – operates in 14 regions across the UK, running in 36 local communities and has helped put 1,281 young people across the UK into employment in the last year with their successful training programme.
SB&G employees spent the day at Street League’s Leeds based site getting involved in mock interviews, careers speed dating and sports skills before competing to be crowned champions in a friendly football match.
Test Engineer, Alfie Thornton, said:
“It’s great that Sky Betting and Gaming allows us to spend paid time in the community enabling us to give back to local charities and help make a difference.
“It was inspiring to hear some of the stories of how Street League has helped build the confidence and gain the necessary qualifications and work experience for participants to move into a sustainable job or further training, and it was great to be able to share my knowledge and experiences moving into my first full time job too.”
Pauline Miller, Employer Engagement Manager at Street League, added:
“It was great to welcome the volunteers from Sky Betting & Gaming to our Leeds academy. Their input was really valued by the young people on the programme and the advice and support given on the day will be invaluable as they take their next step into employment.”
As part of Sky Betting & Gaming’s Giving Back policy, the company allows two paid days per year for employees to put their time towards good causes. Sky Betting & Gaming partnered with Street League to introduce the first of its kind for the company; a combination of educational and sports coaching sessions delivered by employee volunteers.
